This fascinating DVD explores the history of this unique area from earliest times to modern day and is a must for anyone who who knows the South Downs.
This remarkable story began 120 million years ago when Sussex lay beneath a deep ocean where layers of clay, sandstone and chalk settled to form the bedrock of the Downs. Nature then patiently sculpted the rock to create the unique landscape we see today.
The first humans to cast their eyes over the Downs were prehistoric hunters who followed a ridge across the chalk hills. The route they took is still in use today and is known to us as the South Downs Way. Since then, Celtic tribes, Romans, Saxons and Normans have all left their mark on the landscape, language and culture of the downs.
Narrated by Howard Ellison. Produced in association with Sussex Newspapers.
