Leigh The Way We Were

£13.50

A new DVD takes fascinating look back at life in Leigh and the townships, including Tyldesley, Atherton and Astley.
It takes us back to the days when Leigh was known for little more than its cheese, follows its transformation into a major cotton producing and coal mining centre, charts the decline of its industries, and uncovers their rather surprising legacy. It also shows the hardships faced by the region’s workers in their everyday lives. This is from the Leigh Journal and is one of many similar incidents it has covered over the years.
An explosion of a disastrous type took place this morning at the Wood End Colliery in Bedford. The first rescue party came upon the badly mutilated bodies of two lads, named William Heaton, 15, and John Hilton, 16. A painful incident connected with the recovery of these corpses is that the fathers of both boys were among the rescuers.

The film is produced exclusively for the Leigh Journal and is narrated by award winning actor, Howard Ellison. The running time is approximately 50 minutes.
