Victorian Birmingham is ridden with squalid slums. Amidst the poverty, a violent gang culture grows. Gangs like the Cheapside Sloggers and the Garrison Lane mob wage war in the streets and gain Birmingham the reputation of the rowdiest city in the land.  In the 1880s a gang emerges that take the brutality to a new level, but they also have a distinctive style. This account is from the Birmingham Daily Post in April 1883:

The Small Heath gang have their own particular tailor who turns out the bell-bottomed trousers that are part of their striking get up and the bell of which is often adorned with pearl buttons. They wear a silk scarf tied in a certain way, steel toe-capped boots, and their hair is closely cropped, but over their forehead there is left a tuft of hair, which is known as the donkey fringe. It is said that one of the greatest punishments a peaky suffers when he is sent to Winson Green Prison is to be deprived of his fringe. The gangster’s outfit is crowned with an ordinary cloth cap – ordinary except that it has a reinforced peak. A sudden inclination of the head wearing this weapon can start a fight and very often finish it at the same time. It is suitably called the ‘peaky blinder’.

From newspaper reports of the time and eye witness accounts of their exploits, we can follow the rise and fall of the Peaky Blinders. Archive film and photos recreate the era of the Peaky Blinders and with modern footage we can walk in their footsteps.

‘Peaky Blinders – The True Story’ is a compelling and shocking tale.
